Chapter 13

It was nine p.m. when Luke looked over into the passenger seat of his car. Yasmin had her head tipped against the window and was nearly asleep.

He knew his family could be a bit much for anyone. For someone coming from Yasmin's background? Well, he wasn't surprised it had worn her out. Had it been only him that evening, he would have stayed much later; he often even slept over if he drank any of the wine or even if it just got late.

The drive took a while; traffic could pop up anywhere in L.A. at any time. He'd once been stuck in a bad traffic jam on the 405 at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday, so he wasn't shocked by the bumper-to-bumper freeway tonight. Initially, before she'd started to pass out, Yasmin asked about his being adopted again.

He'd heard it all before: didn't he feel the need to find out more about his birth parents? Did he feel like he didn't fit in?

Luke figured he was about fifteen when he learned his then-girlfriend dreamed of finding out she was adopted. Apparently, feeling like you didn't fit in was universal. Adoption was just a handy reason for the emotion. But while he felt different from the rest of his family, so did they all. Donny was a money whore, and no one else understood his need for fancy cars, homes, and women. But he was Donny. Giada loved to cook . . . French Cuisine which his mother always shook her head at. Mom and Pop had taught them all how to feed themselves well and Giada nearly hated Italian food. But they all loved her.

They all accepted Luke's work in law enforcement even if they didn't understand it. He wasn't the only one unmarried; he wasn't the only one who skipped mass far more often than he attended. He was just the only blond.

Right then, there on the freeway, stopping and starting, he realized he wanted more from his life. He wanted a wife and kids. He wanted a smaller version of his own family to add to the bigger one he already had. For years he'd dated off and on, telling himself he wasn't ready for the responsibility of kids, the commitment of staying with one woman forever. Suddenly, he realized he was ready. Somewhere along the line, things had changed though he was only just now realizing it.

He couldn't stop his gaze from straying to the woman beside him, now out cold. But he stopped his thoughts. Yasmin Ali was not for him. Yasmin Ali was an assignment. She was literally his dream-girl, but in broad daylight she was friendly and nothing more.

Luke at last understood what Jessica had once said about Friends-with-benefits not being enough. At the time, he told her she was nuts, that it was the best of all worlds. But Valverde was right: FWB lacked security. It lacked future. It lacked the public affection and the declaration to the world that you were in it.
